Borders add graphic impact to a simple field, or an extra layer of intricacy to a detailed pattern

Take a beautiful design, then make it even better with a contrasting or complementary border. Borders are one of the oldest rug motifs, framing either a simple or ornate field with a detailed, richly colored band of pattern. Bordered rugs are particularly nice in dining rooms, where they frame the table and you can see all or most of the border, but they work just as well in living rooms, bedrooms and family rooms.  The border usually picks up on a motif and colors from the rug, but tweaks or inverts them. The end result enhances the design just as the perfect frame does for a painting.
