Bold and fiery or muted and spice-toned, reds add richness and drama to a room

Red has the greatest intensity of all the colors, and a rich trove of associations--from speedy sports cars to seductive lips, from heartfelt Valentines to festive red-letter days. They come in such a wide range of shades and moods, there's a red for almost everyone: Think terra cotta, cinnabar, coral or claret. Red accents can add vibrancy and warmth to a neutral setting, complement sage greens or navy blues, or enrich a golden yellow room.

Red is said to stimulate the appetite, and perhaps that's why it is a favorite for dining rooms. Or maybe it's because its richness is best appreciated at night, when dining rooms are predominantly used. But it can be equally appealing in a living room, where it always feels sophisticated; a welcoming family room or cozy kitchen nook.
